Our Team

The Advanced Analytics and Data Science team at Catalina creates new, world-class science-based capabilities for external and internal clients, shepherding these initiatives from initial concept, prototyping / proof-of-concept, design, build, testing, training, and handoff.  We use advanced machine learning, data science, operations research, statistics, and related analytics methodologies, operating on big data and delivered on a scalable computing platform using modern technologies.  We illustrate value and drive to bring these capabilities to Production and ensure that these initiatives are successful.


  • Create models --- machine learning, operations research, mathematical and computer science algorithms --- which solve business problems in targeting, personalization, measurement, and other areas. Choose appropriate technologies for solving based on the nature of the business problem.

  • Develop real-time contextual targeting models and software for serving digital media in a world of decreasing identity.

  • Optimizes click-through rates, viewability, and other digital media performance metrics; minimizes Catalina media spends by bidding appropriate amounts; and ensures that campaign performance as seen by the end client in metrics like lift and ROAS is excellent.

  • Develops appropriate statistical mechanisms for extrapolating from purchasing behaviors observed within a subset of retailers, to the projected overall national purchase behavior for the promoted product across all outlets.

  • Advises across multiple complex projects, digests business requirements, clarifies, and assesses the initial approaches pursued by the project data scientist, and makes recommendations for changes to optimize the capability, where appropriate.

  • Provides direction, tools and process support to less senior associates.

  • Strive for software engineering excellence, both as an individual and for the team, to ensure that data science code is maintainable, understandable, testable, and deployable.

  • Utilizes and stays current on applicable programming languages, software technologies, and machine learning algorithms.

  • Leads validation and testing of models to ensure adequacy or determines need for reformulation.  Knows what quality means, strives for quality, designs for quality, tests and refines until a very high quality is achieved, and continuously improves.

  • Delivers prototypes / proofs of concept, and shepherds code through to Production via appropriate software engineering practices.

  • Stay current with the leading edge of machine learning, data science, and other techniques, understanding what methodologies are best-suited for application in digital ad and promotion setting in which we operate.


  • Ph.D. in machine learning, computer science, engineering, mathematics, statistics, operations research, or related discipline AND 5+ years’ experience after graduate school in computation, data science, machine learning or related;  OR

  • Masters degree in (same disciplines mentioned above) AND 7+ years’ experience; OR

  • Bachelor degree AND 9+ years’ experience

  • Computing skills: as many as possible of the following.  Programming (e.g., python, C++, Java), cloud distributed computing (e.g., Databricks, Spark), machine learning framework(s) (e.g., keras, tensorflow), UNIX shell, bitbucket, Target Process/JIRA or other issue-tracking.

  • Good communications, verbally, and also have ability to construct cogent design documents, emails and PowerPoints

  • Minimal supervision required (supervision by manager a few times per month).

  • Will accept candidates living anywhere in the U.S.   Candidate living in Atlanta, Chicago, or Tampa/St. Pete are preferred.
